Windows 8 Versions

Comparing Windows 8 VersionsMicrosoft Windows 8 Versions

Remember that Windows 8 reports to be version 6.2 (Vista was 6.1 and XP 6.0).

Microsoft's Six Editions of Windows 8

  1. Starter (Only available pre-installed by an OEM)
  2. Home Basic (Only sold in emerging markets)
  3. Home Premium (Media Center)
  4. Professional (Same as XP's Business version)
  5. Enterprise (Microsoft Software Assurance customers)
  6. Ultimate (For those who want all the features)

As you walk down the above list, each successive edition builds on features of the previous specification.  This is an improvement over Vista where I was always confused as to which editions had Media Center.

Incidentally SKU (Stock keeping unit) is an alternative name suppliers use for 'Edition' or version.

Minimum Requirements for Windows 8

Each edition of Windows 8 edition has the same system requirements.  The minimum specifications for Windows 8 are the same as Windows 7, or slightly less than Vista, this means that your 'old' hardware is capable of running Windows 8.

Processor - 1 GHz
RAM - 2 MB for the 64-bit
Disk Space - 20 GB for the operating system
DirectX 9 Graphics WDDM (Windows Display Driver Model) 1.0
DVD drive to install the operating system.

It makes a welcome change for a new Microsoft operating system not to demand more CPU power and larger memory.

Comparison Costs of Windows 7 Full-package

Windows 8 is likely to cost about the same as Windows 7.

  • Windows 7 Home Premium: $200
  • Windows 7 Professional: $300
  • Windows 7 Ultimate: $320

Costs for a Microsoft Windows 8 Upgrade

Upgrades to Windows 8 should be around these figures.

  • Home Premium: $120
  • Windows 7 Professional: $200
  • Windows 7 Ultimate: $220

Guy Recommends: The Free IP Address Tracker (IPAT) Free IP Tracker

Calculating IP Address ranges is a black art, which many network managers solve by creating custom Excel spreadsheets.  IPAT cracks this problem of allocating IP addresses in networks in two ways:

For Mr Organized there is a nifty subnet calculator, you enter the network address and the subnet mask, then IPAT works out the usable addresses and their ranges.  For Mr Lazy IPAT discovers and then displays the IP addresses of existing computers.
