After creating this 'Magic Folder', what you see is all the
configuration settings in one place. Here is but one example from
the Action Center links, you could inspect the settings or make changes;
have a look below:-
God Mode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} This group of numbers
looks like a registry setting, indeed you can find it with Regedit, but
see how you can use this string as the name of a Windows 8 folder with
magical contents.
My plan is that
we create a folder called 'God Mode', it collects then lists useful
information from sources such as the Control
Panel or Device Manager.
Launch the Windows 8 Explorer (Not Regedit)
right-click in a blank area.
Click on 'New'.
Select 'Folder' (from the shortcut menu).
Name it: God Mode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}
Press Enter, or just click away somewhere else in Windows Explorer.
When your magic folder arrives, you could try re-sizing its columns to
display the description and even the keywords. Actually, its label
does not have to be God Mode, as long as you keep the string inside the
curly brackets you could rename it, for example I call
mine Guy Mode.
Warning: I am not big on
disclaimers, but I have to draw your attention to two facts, firstly, a
few people say it caused their 64bit Vista OS to crash. Secondly,
we have to wonder why Microsoft don't support this magic folder and
build-it rather like the Control Panel.
Guy Recommends: SolarWinds Engineer's Toolset v10
This Engineer's Toolset v10 provides a comprehensive console of utilities
for troubleshooting computer problems. Guy says it helps me
monitor what's occurring on the network, and each tool teaches me more about how the
underlying system operates.
Previously I just showed you the Action Center, but the slide below
shows you just how data from many different areas of the operating
system are displayed in this one
folder. In real-life you could expand the sub-folder to reveal the
number of items shown in brackets.
Research of the registry shows that Microsoft has include more
possibilities for special folders.
Please note the rhythm of the string you paste: Label.period{don't-mess}
Thus you can change 'GodMode' or 'Location', but you really must have that
full stop, and there is no point in changing what's inside the {braces}.
God Mode was a Vista tip originally given to me by Chad Hooper.
The numbers in the curly brackets when used as a folder name, create a
container with magical contents.
