Ezine 191 - Is the Time for Cloud Computing Upon Us?
Are we on the cusp of switching from local to internet computing?
If it were reliable and trustworthy then the cost benefits for big
companies would be compelling, which would fuel the development of cloud
computing technology. Here are the three main elements needed:
1) Client Access. Using a browser instead of a local GUI would be
no problem; terminal services technology is mature so could deliver a
seamless transition.
2) Web Apps. Running applications across the internet instead of
installing them locally has always been the weak link in the cloud
computing model. However, free Office 2010 Web Apps and Skydrive
may overcome this objection.
3) Secure Storage. Storing data remotely on the internet cloud is
feasible. I have already started with Dropbox, admittedly as
backup rather than as primary storage. Could security fears be the
last stumbling block preventing people wanting to store their data in
huge warehouses?
Is There a Window of Opportunity for Cloud Computing?
Another reason that I believe the time is right for cloud computing is
because there is nothing exciting happening in traditional computing.
I have been wondering lately if the rate of computer progress has slowed
down. Alternatively, is it me? As I get older so I think that I
have seen it all before. Perhaps I should just get out more!
Have there been any cool developments in desktop
operating systems in the last year or so? (Was Windows 7 merely a
service pack for Vista?) Has anything scintillating happened with servers
or routers recently? Does anyone actually use IP6 for real? Perhaps
all the recent innovations have occurred in phones, twitter and facebook;
media which have largely passed me by. If so, then these
technologies would not be inconvenienced by cloud computing.
None of the above factors affects the logic for adopting cloud
computing, but lack of alternative excitement in the computer industry
may throw the spotlight onto client web applications.
The situation with cloud computing reminds me of what Arthur
Schopenhauer (1788-1860) said :-
All truth passes through three stages.
- First, it is ridiculed.
- Second, it is violently opposed.
- Third, it is accepted as being self-evident.
I think we are just making the transition from violent opposition to
acceptance of cloud computing.
Resources Related to Cloud Computing
These three ideas were kindly researched by Paul DeBrino
Raed writes in to say that:
a) I should have mentioned Google Apps b) A company called
force / AppexChange
is worth looking at.

Recommends: The Free Config Generator
Solarwinds' Config Generator is a free tool, which puts you in charge of
controlling changes to network routers and other SNMP devices.
Boost your network performance by activating network device features
you've already paid for.
Guy says that for newbies the biggest benefit of this free tool is that
it will provide the impetus for you to learn more about configuring the SNMP
service with its 'Traps' and 'Communities'.

Tools4Ever provide not one but a host of handy network utilities. They
have a professional stable of products for example, SpaceGuard Disk quota
manager, Self Service Password Reset, and my favourite FreePing.
Tools4Ever use the popular internet utility model where we download a trial
version, and if we like it, we return and buy the full version.
Check out the network utilities from

Will and Guy's Humour
If you have a computer problem next week then beware of April Fools' Day
hoaxes. Most people can take a good joke against themselves, but it
becomes annoying if you try to cure something that isn't broken.
However,
forewarned is forearmed, watch out for mischievous pranks ranging from a dummy mouse, strange AutoCorrections,
or
unusual screen contrast settings, to the usual batch of false alarms for
computer
viruses on April 1st. See will and Guy's predictions for
April Fools Day 2010.
