SharePoint Portal Server 2001 - Configuring

Introduction

If you are familiar with Windows 2000 or Exchange, then you will soon find their way around SharePoint Portal Server.  However there is one vital knack to administration and it is this, understand the difference between configuring the Web Folder View, and configuring the Portal Server Console.

While I only need to configure the Workspace occasionally, when I do, it is for a vital task that cannot be done thought the Portal Server Console.   So avoid frustration and master the difference between these two interfaces.  In other respects SharePoint Portal Server is straightforward, powerful and enjoyable.

The Web Folder View of your Workspace

Firstly, logon to the SharePoint server.  To find the Web Folder View, open the (ordinary) Explorer, then browse to - Network Neighbourhood.

In the unlikely event of it not appearing, select  'Add network place' and type in the URL of the server and workspace.

To see all the folders, make sure you have the 'Show hidden files' option set (Tools, Folder Options, View, Show hidden files)

Use the workspace to create sub folders, rename the Categories.  In truth, I come here to the workspace when I cannot adjust the property using the Dashboard below.

Portal Server Dashboard

To access the Portal Server Console, use the Internet Explorer http://server/workspace.

This is where you add documents and manage most of the dashboard administration.

If you can see a property buy cannot configure it, then go to the Web Folder view above.  For example, you may not like the name 'Category 1' you cannot rename it here, but you can in the Web Folders.

Portal Server Console

The main job in this Console is to set the permissions at the highest level in SharePoint Portal Server.  The other time use this console is when I need to create another Workspace.  Just right the server object in the snap-in.

You can find this Portal Server Console by going to the Administrative tools Menu and selecting SharePoint.  Better still, add it as a shap-in to your MMC.
