Windows Media Server

The point is that Windows Media Server can use more formats than just HTTP. Namely it can use RTSP MMS. So, if you use IIS you are limited to stream HTTP only. MMS (Microsoft Media Server) is a protocol developed for Media Player. With MMS you can play audio or video without having to download the file first.

RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol) is a client-server multimedia presentation control protocol. It was designed to stream multimedia over IP networks. It uses existing web infrastructure e.g. HTTP and works well both for single-viewers wanting media-on-demand or large audiences.
